So this is my first post. I’ve decided to blog about my experience with braces. So I’ve needed braces for awhile now, probably should’ve had it about 10 years ago. I’ve procrastinated this long for several reasons…one of them was that i wanted to get married first. Of course, I know that’s a pretty vain reason but hey, dating was hard enough without braces! So 10 years later, i married a wonderful man and now I’ve decided to fix my teeth! I apparently have an open and cross bite. Which means I can quite close my teeth together and when I do, i can stick half my tongue out without even opening my mouth. I can’t eat pizza, hot dogs, sandwiches, etc. the right way, meaning i have to put the food to the side of my mouth and use my molars to bite down. I have learned to eat this way for awhile now and I don’t even notice it but my friends sure do.
So the month before my wedding (Aug of ’08) I went in for a consult with the orthodontist. She examed my teeth and gave me her recommendations. She suggested that I needed oral surgery to correct my jaw because my upper jaw was narrower than my lower jaw and surgery will make my teeth perfect again. So I went to an oral surgeon for a consult and he explained to me what I needed. So after everything was done with I get an estimate of how much it would cost me. The total came out to around $22K! I was shocked! There was no way in hell i would pay that much to fix my teeth. That’s a whole freaking car! Not only do I not have the money for it but I would have to endure some pretty heavy duty surgery on my face. No thanks.
So I went back to the ortho and told her that I am not going with the surgery because it is way too much money for me. She then suggested another route for me which was to get the braces and extract 4 of my molars. This sounded way better than surgery although she did say the results won’t be perfect, i would be 3mm off or something. Now, I am cool with just being 3mm off, as long as it closes my open bite and I can eat pizza normally, I am happy. At this point, I am happy with anything that’ll fix my open bite.
So that is where I am now. I am in the first steps of getting my braces. I am on my way to a better smile!
